The ancient Indian “science of life” called Ayurveda
explains that human beings, like the Universe, are made
up of each of the five elements (air, space, fire, water
and earth) and the Soul.

Therefore, our bodies are a microcosm of the Universe within itself.
These elements, in their biological form, are known as doshas:

Vata is made up of a combination of Air and Space

The Sanskrit word Vata is derived from the verb ‘Va’ which means motion. Vata is responsible for all the movements in our body including breathing, digestion, and nerve impulses from the brain. Due to its continuous motion, Vata keeps the life force permeating all parts of the body.

Vata-type people or people who have a greater influence of Vata Dosha on their personality are generally thin and find it hard to gain weight. Because of this, Vatas have very little energy reserve and can tire easily and get themselves out of balance. Vatas need to get sufficient rest and not overdo things, stay warm, and keep a regular lifestyle routine. Vatas are lively and fun, they get bored easily, and they are often visionaries. Celebrities who reflect in Vata include Gwyneth Paltrow, Barack Obama, and Jim Carrey.

When Vata is out of balance, anxiety and other nervous disorders may be present. Digestive problems, constipation, cramps, and even premenstrual pain usually are attributed to a Vata imbalance.

The most important thing to know about Vata is that it leads the other doshas. Vata usually goes out of balance first, which causes the early stages of disease. More than half of all illnesses are Vata disorders. Balancing Vata is important for everyone, because when Vata is in balance, Pitta and Kapha are generally in balance as well.

Pitta is a combination of Fire and Water.

The word Pitta is derived from the root ‘Tapa’ which means to impart heat. Pitta is responsible for digestion and metabolism in our body and thus to generate heat. It is in fact responsible for taking any stimulus, including food and breaking it down, or digesting it, to a level that is easily assimilated by the body.

Pitta-type people or those who have a greater influence of the Pitta Dosha on their personality are generally of medium size and well proportioned. They are more muscular, and athletic. They have a medium amount of physical energy and stamina. They also tend to be intelligent and have a sharp wit and a good ability to concentrate. They make good leaders and businesspeople. Examples of Pitta celebrities include Madonna, Julianne Moore, and Brad Pitt.

Pitta dosha leads us to crave moderation and purity. We rely on Pitta to regulate our intake of food, water, and air. Any toxins, such as alcohol or tobacco, show up as a Pitta imbalance.

Fire is a characteristic of Pitta. Since Pittas’ body temperature is generally warm, Pitta types can go out of balance with overexposure to the sun. Their eyes are sensitive to light. They are ambitious by nature but also can be demanding and abrasive when out of balance.

Kapha is a combination of Earth and Water

Kapha is responsible for giving stability to the body. It provides nourishment to the bodily tissues. Kapha dosha controls the moist tissues of the body, so a Kapha imbalance may show up as a cold, allergies, or asthma.

Kapha-type people or people with greater influence of Kapha Dosha on their personalities, tend to have sturdy, heavy frames, providing a good reserve of physical strength and stamina. This strength gives Kaphas a natural resistance to disease and a generally positive outlook about life. Kaphas tend to have thick, dark hair, and big eyes and lips. Kapha celebrities include George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, and Jennifer Lopez.

The Kapha dosha is slow, and Kapha types tend to be slow eaters with slow digestion. They also speak slowly. They are calm and affectionate but, when out of balance, can become stubborn and lazy. They learn slowly, with a methodical approach, but also retain information well with a good understanding of it.

Kapha types need to progress to stay in balance. They should not dwell in the past or resist change. They need lots of exercise and need to be careful not to overeat. Kaphas need stimulation to bring out their vitality. Kapha dosha teaches us steadiness and a sense of well-being.

Every activity and function of our mind and body is dependent upon the balanced or unbalanced state of our doshas…

Because we all have all of the elements in our bodies, we all have each
of the doshas as well. But every one of us is born with a unique, individual
balance of these doshas. So, no two of us are alike!

And this is where your Dosha combination or Prakriti play a role more critical than you can imagine…

The original state of your Dosha-Combination which you were born with is known as Prakriti.

Without truly understanding your Prakriti or your unique Dosha Composition, you pile on different diets, lifestyles and practices to improve your life, but instead end up making it worse!

If you were to study the history of modern medicine, you would learn how the discovery of separate organs in the human body actually limited modern medical science. Today, it reflects clearly in our confusion about which specialist to go to, say, for bloating or weight gain rooted in thyroid, do we go to an Endocrinologist or a gynaecologist or a gastroenterologist or a nutritionist or all of them and then a psychotherapist?

The problem is, that no one really looks
at an individual as a whole!

And if the physical and emotional pain, trauma and confusion is not enough- getting sick is also E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E!

It’s alarming how the health practices that we often end up choosing either out of fear or out of lack of enough exposure are actually draining us out physically, emotionally and financially!

With due respect to many achievements of modern science like quick and accurate testing mechanisms etc. which Ayurveda functions in conjunction with, what Ayurveda brings to you which modern medicine does not and cannot- is the realization of your being more than what is perceived:

Ayurveda prevents us from going on practicing habits that are bad for us, helps us know our Prakriti and understand our natural tendencies, how we operate, and what it takes for us to get along with the people in our lives.

Ayurvedic remedy of balancing our Doshas is actually a universal 3 Step Process which eliminates the concept of forceful change and makes living a complex life simple & full of happiness.

But before I go ahead to explain what the 3 steps process really is,
here’s why should you pay careful attention to what i have to share-

Firstly and most significantly, I am a living example of what Ayurveda can really do for you! And there is NO GREATER PROOF than my very own life.The reason why I love Ayurveda so much and have embraced this lifestyle so completely is
-Because it works, because Ayurveda actually transformed my life for the better in so many magnificent ways!

My first son was moved to a separate area with panels
around his desk in school when he was in the first grade…

One day I picked my son up from school and the moment he got in the car he started crying. He was miserable at school. What was supposed to be a happy time in his life was turning into a nightmare. He said he was picked on, that he had no friends, and that he didn’t want to go back. My heart sank. I couldn’t stand to see my child so distraught.

My son was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Very bright, high IQ, but he just couldn’t focus enough to pay attention in class. He was disturbing the class.
The teacher wasn’t sure how to handle it, tried moving him to the front, even tried moving him to a separate area with panels around his desk but it probably made things worse because my son started having problems with the other kids in the class…

No mother wants to see her child struggle. At that time, ADHD was kind of a new thing – and some people didn’t even believe it was real. I had to educate myself, and then educate the school system as to what was happening. I took my son for a consultation with a therapist, and then with a psychologist for testing, and then to a pediatric psychiatrist for a specialist’s point of view, and everyone agreed that it was indeed ADHD. They also suggested that he start on medication to help him focus in school.

As a mom I wanted to do what was best for my child, and I hesitated putting him on medication at such a young age. But I had to do something, or he would likely get held back, or kicked out of school.

So I researched all of our options. I read so many books, and attended parenting groups and classes. I learned about homeopathy, naturopathy, color therapy, aromatherapy – everything. And I tried pretty much everything, with limited success. And then I found Ayurveda. This was such a blessing in our lives! Ayurveda made sense to me, it was so practical, natural, and easy to implement into our daily routine.

Ayurveda says that ADHD is a Vata imbalance:

“Using a prevalence rate of 5%, the annual societal ‘‘cost of illness’’ for ADHD is estimated to be between $36 and $52 billion, in 2005 dollars. It is estimated to be between $12,005 and $17,458 annually per individual.” And this was back in 2005!

Too much Vata, air and space, in the system. I started my son on the Vata routine. I served him a hot breakfast, rather than the cold cereal he would usually have. I made sure he had enough good oils in his foods. I taught him how to do Abhyanga, the sesame oil massage. I even taught him how to meditate! I kept him on a strict routine throughout the day. I also started him on some ayurvedic herbal supplements. And he thrived! The teacher saw a big difference in his behavior at school. And I could tell that he seemed much happier overall. Along the way, my son also learned how to take care of himself, so that he can now manage his ADHD on his own.

But that was not it…

When my son was diagnosed with ADHD, I learned that this is a genetic condition, and that he got it from me!Knowing this, made a lot of what I had been through in my childhood, make sense to me – a low sense of self-esteem, struggles in school and socially, and difficulty in getting and staying organized. Once I got myself on the Vata routine, I felt much more focused. So much so that I’ve been able to write 8 books!

I am a Vata type myself and knowing about Ayurveda, and how we can work with the doshas, helped me to overcome a lifelong problem with anxiety. Vatas are prone to anxiety. Vatas tend to be nervous, and we when something goes wrong, we blame ourselves, as if somehow everything is our fault. Travelling was very difficult for me. I often had to take anxiety medication before getting on an airplane. And then I’d have the awful side effects of the medication to deal with, but to me that was better than going through the horrible anxiety. There were times that the anxiety was so bad that I’d have panic attacks. And anyone who has had a panic attack knows how hard it is to recover and feel like yourself again. It was an ordeal. Sometimes I couldn’t function properly for days. When I started on the Vata routine, my anxiety subsided. The panic attacks stopped. I’ve travelled all over the world without medication, feeling absolutely marvellous sipping my Vata tea!

My relationships flourish, not only because I understand
myself better, but because I also understand other people, and their own natures so much better. I feel more confident, and happy, my anxiety has diminished.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is another common disorder that is prominent in Vata types. This would come and go for me, depending on the stress in my life, and as a young mom with many responsibilities I had a lot of stress in my life! It was so bad that my doctor prescribed medication – but I couldn’t tolerate it. The side effects were worse than the original problem. Years later I found out that this drug was taken off the market because other people were experiencing the same thing. The Ayurveda solution saved me. And I have been fine ever since!

There have been many other times when I have used the wisdom of Ayurveda to overcome challenges in my life
*Across 10 countries, it was projected that ADHD was associated with 143.8 million lost days of productivity each year.

*IBS is most common functional bowel disorder and affects up to 20% of the US population

When I was going through a divorce I was stressed out and filled with anxiety. Yet Ayurveda got me through. I stuck to my daily routine, and especially my Vata rituals, and I got through it with grace and ease.

When my brother-in-law died, I felt a deep depression coming on. Knowing that depression is a Kapha imbalance, I stuck to my routine, and applied some of the Kapha balancing techniques, and I got through it. I was able to support my sister, and deal with all the sadness and turmoil going on in my family. I was the one that the family looked to for stability and strength, and thanks to Ayurveda, I was able to be there for them.
We all deal with hormonal issues at various times in our lives. When I was in peri-menopause I started getting terrible migraine headaches. I remember being at a school event one day and not even being able to see clearly. Everyone was having fun and enjoying the party and I was feeling nauseous, trying to find some quiet space where I could close my eyes. The migraine medication that was prescribed wiped me out – all I could do was sleep after I took it. That certainly didn’t fit in with my busy lifestyle! So I sought out an ayurvedic solution – and it worked. I found relief, and I haven’t had a migraine since because now I know how to avoid them.

After that, I went through menopause, I never had to take hormones, I never had a serious hot flash, I never suffered any of the side-effects or symptoms that my friends complained about. Menopause was easy for me, and I know it was all because I incorporated the 3 Step Process, applying the principles of Ayurveda to my life.
