According to the NCBI (National Center For Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library Of Medicine), there are an estimated 64 million postmenopausal women in the United States. As many as 32 million women may suffer from vaginal and vulvar atrophy1 symptoms including dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse), vaginal dryness and vaginal irritation.

Dryness can happen to any woman of any age.

The vagina is kept moist by the mucous membranes present in the vagina. Estrogen produced in the female body encourages the vaginal tissues to keep the vagina moist. As women reach their menopausal age (45-55 years) the ovaries produce less estrogen. Drops in estrogen levels or thinning of the vaginal lining can lead to vaginal infections, which in turn causes issues like dryness.

Vaginal Dryness In Ayurvedic Medicine: Suska Yoni

In Ayurvedic medicine, the ancient Ayurvedic scholar Charaka described a condition called Suska yoni. Suska means dry and yoni refers to the female reproductive organs. If during sexual intercourse, a woman suppresses her natural urges, then Vata gets aggravated. This causes pain, obstruction to the passage of stool and urine and dryness of the vaginal opening.3

For the disorder caused by aggravated Vata dosha, those suffering with the above should be given oleation, fomentation, Ayurvedic medicated enema and therapies which pacify Vata dosha.4
